Setting:The time period of Number the Stars was 1943 during World War II. Number the Stars takes place in the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen. Copenhagen is a beautiful city run by a caring king, King Christian X. The only problem about Copenhagen is that German soldiers patrol the streets.
Chapter 1: Ellen and Annemarie are racing and then a German Soldier stops the and asks them why are you running. They answer quickly and then hurry home. Ellen and Annemarie wern't going to tell thier parents but Annemarie's sister Kirsten tells their parents.
Chapter 2: Annemarie is telling Kirsten a fairy tale and she talks about a king and a queen. This reminds her abut the stories her father used to tell her about Denmark's King, King Christian X. In his youth the king would ride through the city of Copenhagen and Annemarie and her sister Lise[ who had died two weeks before her wedding] would go and watch the King. Annemarie most remembers the story that her father told about how the King was riding through the city and a Nazi asked where are his bodyguard's and a man answered Denmark is his body guard. King Christian was nice and friendly to the people and the people liked him.
Chapter 3:During September in Denmark, Annemarie and Kirstin are going to school and their mother was going to button Kirstin's jacket and the button had broken. So their mother tells Annemarie to go to Mrs. Hirsch's shop and buy another button after school. Annemarie go's there after school but Mrs. Hirsch isn't there. Annemarie and Kirstin go home and tell their mother.Their mother was troubled when she heard that she wasn't there and went to talk to Ellen's mother. That night Peter Nielson came and gave her parents the forbidned newspaper that said about the rest of the world and told them what the Nazis were really doing.
Chapter 4: Annemarie and Ellen are playing when Kirstin and her mother come home. While they are playing Ellen asks if Kirstin and Annemarie want to come and watch her and her family light the candles for the Jewish New Year. Annemarie and Kirstin are not Jewish but the agree because the like watching her family cleebrate the New Year. But after school Ellen comes and Annemarie's parents say that she is staying with them tonight. After dinner when Kirstin and her mother go to her room to go to bed Annemarie asks why Ellen is staying with them and Ellen and Annemarie's father tell her. The Nazis had come into the synogouge and taken all the names of the Jewish people and where they live. They told Ellen's family that the soldiers might come that night.

Chapter 6: Annemarie's father calls Uncle Hienrik and he tells him that Annemarie, her mother and Kirstin are coming with a box of cigaretts. So Annemarie, Kirstin, Their mother, and Ellen get on a train to go to Uncle Hienrik's house. The soldiers came into the house and asked why so many people had come to Uncle Hienriks house. Mama replied that there had been a death. Then one of the soldiers asked Annemarie who had died and she said My Great Aunt Brite. Then the soldier says he understands but then he asks why the coffin is closed up so tightly and says that they should open it. And Mama says that that is a good idea but she also says that reat Aunt Brite died of typhus and she is about to open it and the Nazi slaps her. He says that he does not want to see their dead Aunt and tells the to open it after they leave. Then he puts out the candles and they leave. Then Peter reads a quick psalm and opens the casket.
